Fractures of the bones of the hand and the wrist constitute an emergency situation. After trauma results in a suspected fracture of the hand or wrist, urgent evaluation, x-ray examination, and directed treatment must be carried out as soon as possible.

For example, a very unstable fracture makes repositioning any bone fragments impossible, because they won’t stay in place.
