How to Manage and Treat Dupuytren’s Disease for Better Hand Function
Dr. Daniel Durand has over 20+ years of experience treating this condition.
What is Dupuytren’s Disease?
Dupuytren’s disease, also known as Dupuytren’s contracture, can begin mildly but can have a significant impact on daily life. It affects the connective tissue under the skin of the palm, causing a progressive tightening that can pull one or more fingers toward the hand. The condition can make simple tasks such as holding a coffee cup, shaking hands, or even laying the hand flat on a table complex. Dr Daniel Durand is dedicated to helping patients understand and manage Dupuytren’s disease, offering advice and treatments to restore hand function and make life a little easier.
What Causes Dupuytren’s Disease?
Dupuytren’s disease has a strong genetic link and is more common in people of Northern European origin, particularly in men over the age of 40. Lifestyle factors, such as smoking and alcoholism, can increase the risk of developing the disease, but genetics play a considerable role. The first signs are small, firm bumps in the palm, usually painless but gradually forming thick cords under the skin that pull the fingers inwards. The ring and little fingers are most often affected, and as the disease progresses, these contractures can make basic movements more difficult.
Treatment Options That Fit Your Life
Although Dupuytren’s disease can be progressive, there are some practical options for treating it and regaining mobility. In the early stages, Dr Durand may recommend stretching exercises, physical therapy or steroid injections to relieve stiffness and slow progression. When the condition is severe, surgery may be required to remove the thickened tissue, allowing the fingers to return to their natural position. For more advanced cases, Dr Durand proposes Surgical Fasciectomy.
